2011-2012 Season Registration

Registration is now open for the 2011-2012 Curling Season. Members register as individuals, and the league can accept registrations in multiples of 8 players [which corresponds to the number of players on a sheet of ice]). Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis, and payment is now setup via PayPal! Avoid disappointment, register early!

Costs for 12 games - $155/player. We minimize costs by booking private rental ice time at the Mayflower Curling Club. Please note that joining the Loose Ends does not grant you the privledges of full membership at the Mayflower Curling Club, i.e. sparing in the leagues organized by the Mayflower Curling Club.

Games are normally 5:30-7:30pm on alternating Sunday Evenings at the Mayflower Curling Club (3000 Monaghan Drive - behind the Young St. Pizza Hut). If demand exceeds 6 sheets (48 players), we are able to book the 7:30pm-9:30pm timeslot as well to accommodate more players. We have also asked about the 3:30pm time slot as feedback from players last year, but we have not heard yet about the inquiry.

Details:

Registration open until October 10, 2011 OR until registration reaches capacity (dependant upon ice availability from the Mayflower Curling Club).

Players of all skill levels are welcome - that means Beginners too! Consider that the 2009-2010 season was the first for the league with about 30 new players, and 2011-2012 season had about 40 new players, so we are all very beginner and loving curling!

BEGINNERS - There is going to be a Training Session on the Ice as part of the Bluenose Bonspiel of the Evening of Friday Sept 2nd, 2011. Note the Mayflower Curling Club also hosts a multi-week LEARN TO CURL class for a very low fee for 5 weeks starting in September. Warning - the LEARN TO CURL class fills up FAST, and interested parties should contact the Mayflower Curling Club (www.mayflowercc.com or 454-0085).

League Logistics

Forming Teams and Amount of Play - Feedback from the 2009-2010 season suggests that we should stick to the social format used in the first year, where a senior group of Loose Ends curlers will form the teams for each round. Unlike a few other years, we will be changing teams up only twice this season - so you will be on a team for the first 6 games, then switch for the second half of the season. We will be rotating people with different skill levels around the league, so you get to play with different people, and also socially get to meet others.

What you need to play:

  1. Very CLEAN SNEAKERS - ABSOLUTELY NO DEBRIS, DIRT or ROCKS on the soles of the sneakers at all (or curling shoes)
  2. Shoe slider - you can borrow one from the club (for free), or you can buy your own.
  3. Broom - You can buy your own broom ($50-$150), or you can rent a broom from the club (about $2/week)
  4. Comfortable clothing (gym or sweat pants, warm sweaters or long sleeve t-shirts, layering is recommended)

The History of the Loose Ends Group

The Loose Ends used to be an unofficial club established in September 2006, with gays and lesbians curling on teams with the Friday night Recreation League at the Mayflower Curling Club. In the 2009-2010 curling season, The Loose Ends club started an official social league on Sunday Evenings at the Mayflower Curling Club, and maxed out at 48 curlers (and a dozen spares) who played on 6 sheets of ice. For the 2010-2011 Season, the Loose Ends group grew to 80 members.

The Loose Ends group has successfully hosted a PINK BROOM fundrasier in Halifax to get the GLBT community and its supporting straight allies to try its hand at curling in March 2009 and March 2010. This fundraiser is setup to help raise money to send Halifax teams to the Canadian Gay Curling Championships.

In Halifax, our annual Bonspiel on the Canadian-Gay-Bonspiel-Circuit is ever popular social Bluenose Bonspiel, and is held over Labour Day. After Sept 2011 though, the next Bluenose Bonspiel will take place in conjunction of the 2013 Canadian Gay Curling Championships between April 25-29, 2013. We are looking for volunteers already!

Gay Curling in Canada

There are eight other GLBT curling leagues across Canada in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto (2 clubs), Ottawa, and Montreal (2 clubs). Many of them organize their own bonspiels throughout the curling season - a Gay-Bonspiel-Circuit so to speak. As well, the seventh edition of the Canadian Gay Curling Campionships will be held in Vancouver, British Columbia Feb 3-5, 2011. Check out www.gaycurl.ca for links and information on the other GLBT leagues across Canada.
